The honest guide

Drywall Repair in the Portland Metro.

A homeowner over in the Park Place neighborhood of Oregon City called us last fall with a story we hear a lot. Her son's bedroom door had a stack of two fist-sized holes from a slammed knob, plus a hairline crack creeping across the hallway ceiling. She'd tried one of those store-bought patch kits, and now there was a shiny lump on the wall that caught the light from every angle. "I've made it worse," she said. That's the call we get more than any other for drywall repair around here.

Here's the thing. Drywall is forgiving when you know the steps, and unforgiving when you don't. Most folks around Mulino and Molalla can sand a small patch okay, but the part that gives DIY repairs away is the texture and the feathering, not the patch itself. That's where The Dandy Handyman comes in.

Over the years we've patched everything from a single doorknob ding in a Canby rental to a full ceiling section in an older Willamette neighborhood home in West Linn after a slow upstairs leak. The steps are the same either way: prep the area, cut clean edges, back the hole if it's bigger than a softball, tape, mud, sand, texture, and prime. Skipping any one of those is what makes a patch show up later under side-lighting.

Good to know

Drywall Questions.

How long does a typical drywall patch take?
Most small to medium patches need two visits. First visit is the patch and first coat of mud, second visit is sanding, second coat, and texture once everything is fully dry. We don't rush drying time, that's where bad patches come from.
Can you match my existing wall texture?
Yes. Around the Portland metro we mostly see orange peel, knockdown, and smooth (Level 5) finishes. We test the spray pattern on a scrap piece first, then dial it in until it disappears into the surrounding wall.
Do I really need a pro for a small hole?
Honestly, a tiny nail hole? Spackle and a finger will do it. Anything larger than a quarter, anything on a ceiling, or anywhere with texture, that's when calling a pro pays for itself in time and a cleaner result.
Will there be drywall dust everywhere?
Not the way we work. We tape off the area with plastic, run drop cloths well past the work zone, and use a HEPA vacuum while sanding. You shouldn't be wiping down dust two rooms over after we leave.
What about painting the patch after?
We can prime and paint the repair if you have leftover paint, or just leave it primed and ready for your painter. If you'd like, we can handle the full paint job too. Just ask when you book.
My ceiling has a crack that keeps coming back. What's that about?
Most of the time it's a seasonal movement issue, not a structural one. We see it constantly in older homes around Molalla and the Hillendale area of Oregon City, where our wet-to-dry cycle shifts the framing year after year. The fix is mesh tape over the crack with a wider feathered patch, not just spackle on top. Done right, it stays put.
Can you replace a whole section of drywall after a leak?
Yes, as long as the area is dry and the source of the leak is fixed. We cut out the damaged sheet, add backing if needed, hang new drywall, tape, mud, texture, and prime. You'd never know it had been there.
